“Cow Catcher” is a nickname given to the front facia of specific “Series 1” E30s. The BMW 3-Series cars built from 1985-1988 with “is” and “es” trim levels received a sporty, stylish plastic front air dam. The upgrade panel featured lower air ducts (two for the “es”, four for the “is”) and also housed the fog lights.
The nickname was coined because the body panels are vaguely reminiscent of the structures mounted to the old locomotives for clearing debris – and occasionally livestock – off the tracks. Probably originally intended as a pejorative, it has become a term of endearment. The cars fitted with this option are more desired by the collector community.
